The Botanical Description
The description of hemp, botanically known as Cannabis sativa and should not be confused with the marijuana plant which is a relative of the industrial hemp plant, which can be used for many different products. The translation from Latin names this the “useful hemp.” The useful hemp has been used to run countries, in early America hemp was used for money to purchase goods and further in the past it was known to be one of the first materials.
Cannabis sativa belongs to the nettle family and is an annual plant that will mature between 70 and 120 days. The plant can grow from 5 feet to 15 feet in height, it will have leaves that are narrow and tapered and will be composed of between 5 to 9 leaves with pointed ends. The leaves of the hemp plant measure between 2 and 5 inches, these leaves will be concentrated at the top of the plant as it matures.
The stalk of the plant is course and it is a tall thin plant that grows seeds, which can be used in many different hemp products. The interesting part of the hemp plant that was one of the reasons in the past that growing crops was ordered by kings and other officials is the amount of plants that can be grown on one acre of land. On one square yard of ground approximately 900 hemp plants can be grown, making this a high yield crop from which many different products can be manufactured.
